Program Overview

Business Immigration to Rural Alberta

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has four entrepreneur streams: Rural Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur, Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur and Farm. This page covers the Rural Entrepreneur Stream, for experienced business owners and senior managers who will start a new business or take over an existing one in a participating rural community.

Candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with a support letter from a participating rural community. AAIP scores EOIs and sends the highest-ranking candidates a request to submit a business application.

Tax note: Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Provincial personal income tax applies, with 2026 rates ranging from 8% to 15%. Alberta's general provincial corporate income tax rate is 8%.

Key program conditions:

  • New business: at least 51% ownership; business succession: 100% ownership
  • Business located in a participating rural Alberta community
  • New businesses: at least one full-time job for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (succession businesses are exempt)

A community support letter from a participating rural community is required with the EOI.
